Smash Bros Direct Rundown

Hello everyone, Kieran 'Mukea' Miller here again. Last night Nintendo released a very special episode of Nintendo Direct. This episode was purely dedicated to the new Smash Bros games that are coming out for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. Among the announced features are new items, new characters, new game modes and rough release dates. Read on for more info!

The first thing to be announce was the release dates, the 3DS version will be released in the summer whereas the Wii U version won't be released until winter. I have both a 3DS and a Wii U so will ultimately end up getting it on both consoles, however I have always wanted one to be on a portable console so I cannot wait for the 3DS version!

Another feature that was announced is that on certain stages there will be bosses, for example there is a Megaman stage in which a boss called the Yellow Devil appears. He attacks randomly from a side of the map then moves to the other side and attacks again, the only way to hurt him is to hit him in the eye. This works kind of like the final smash balls that appear, when he gets defeated he explodes and it acts as an attack for the player that got the last hit in on him, causing damage to their enemies. This will be cool because it gives a few of the stages more flavour and uniqueness.

More information was also given about the online modes that will be coming with the games. There will be two game modes, For Fun and For Glory. For Fun is your average online match where the stage is random, there will be default items and only the number of games played is recorded, not wins and losses. However, in For Glory things are a bit different. If any of you have ever taken Smash Bros even slightly seriously you will love this game mode. It is a match on Final Destination only (the completely flat stage) with no items, with 1 on 1 games also possible rather than the 4 player free for all! In this game mode your wins and losses will be recorded. This takes out the element of luck from items and is a much more serious game mode, I am so excited for it because I used to play like this most of the time anyway. Oh and also, so that For Glory players don't miss out on the different stages, EVERY stage will have a Final Destination form where it will be flat with no platforms. This is so For Glory players can still experience the different locations and music that the game has to offer.

The next thing they announced was something called Global Smash Power. It is a statistic that builds up when you do certain things and you get an overall score. This score can then be compared to everyone world wide and you can see how many people you are better than. I thought this was a bit weird really but it's their way of doing a sort of ranking system.

New items were shown that come from various different games. These include:

  • Fire Bar
  • Back Shield
  • Bombchu
  • Fairy Bottle
  • Ore Club
  • X Bomb
  • Hocotate Bomb
  • Rocket Belt
  • Steel Diver
They also mentioned that along with the normal Pokéballs that send out a random Pokémon to the battlefield to fight for you, there will also be Master Balls. These Master Balls will ONLY send out rare and legendary Pokémon! So you know that if you manage to get a Master Ball that you will definitely get something good out of it!

The next change I think is incredibly cool. The characters that can change form such as Samus turning into Zero Suit Samus and Zelda transforming into Sheikh will no longer be able to do so. Instead, Sheikh and Zero Suit Samus are being released as completely separate characters! This is awesome and I will definitely play Sheikh!

Next they spoke about some of the specific character mechanics. First up was Rosalina and Luma. Luma can be sent away from Rosalina and there are certain moves that Luma can perform when Rosalina is far away as a massive range attack. I liked the sound of this because if you can position Luma really well and keep her in good places you will be able to pull of some awesome combos. Then they spoke a little bit more about Little Mac. Seeing as he is a boxer, when he is on the ground he is incredibly fast and powerful, however his air attacks are terrible. And his ability to recover after being hit off the map is even worse. HOWEVER, remember when he was first announced the mentioned that he has his own little bar that gets full as he takes and deals damage? Well last night they announced that when it is full he is able to perform an Instant KO Uppercut! That sounds so incredibly overpowered and I can definitely see him being played a lot in For Glory, as long as people will be able to avoid the more air oriented characters.

Also mentioned was Custom Move Sets. Not much was said about these however in the video they showed it seemed that, for example, as Mario you could either choose to have a bigger, slower, higher damage fireball, or a quicker and smaller fireball that deals less damage. However these custom move sets aren't available when you play online with strangers.

3DS owners rejoice as the next thing that was shown is a game mode that is only available on the 3DS version of the game. It is called Smash Run and it has up to 4 players running around a dungeon type stage, killing computer enemies that drop power ups. I believe you are able to attack each other in this area but there isn't much point because of what happens next. You have 5 minutes to run around this map collecting as many power ups as you can and the players then proceed to a battle against each other using the gained power ups! These power ups include things such as increased speed and increased jump. This sounds like a lot of fun but I don't know why they decided to only release it on the 3DS version.

And that was the end of the Nintendo Direct. Or was it? After it had ended, they showed another exclusive video. It shows various characters from the game and then Charizard appears! Charizard is now his own seperate character (they got rid of the Pokémon trainer) and while Charizard is fighting the other characters in the video you can see a shadow charging up a water attack. It is later revealed that this character is Greninja, the final evolution of Froakie from Pokémon X and Y! I had him on Pokémon X and think he is amazing, I mean come on, he's a ninja frog! I cannot wait to play as him, as long as he is unlocked straight away he will be the first character I play!

If you missed the Smash Bros Direct then I hope this information helped you. Until next time, that's all from me. Thanks for reading!
